timcor monthy correlation

Added by Dayane Padoan about 3 years ago

Dear all,

I am trying to find time correlation between two data sets using CDO (timcor).
Both datasets contain precipitation monthly data through 124 years. If I use the whole datasets, with data from january to december of each year, I get a nice correlation as response.
However, if I split the datasets by month and calculate the time correlation over each month (e.g. over all januarys), it results in bad correlation.
Since I'm just selecting a group of values from the original datasets, shouldn't it give me a better correlation response? What could have been wrong?

Thank you very much for your help!

That question is beyond the scope of this forum. However, in the first case you are seeing a correlation in the month to month changes i.e. intra-annual variation. In the second you are finding little correlation between years of the same month i.e. interannual variation.
