CDO on Kali (Linux Bash Shell)

Added by Luis Hernando Gomez almost 6 years ago

Would like to install CDO using the new Kali Linux Shell (I have a Win 10 PC), .. the instructions to install CDO in Linux are valid to be used with Kali .. ??
Sorry, my Linux level is very low, ... if there is a guide for "dummies", will appreciate it

Thanks in advance

hi Luis!

Kali Linux and low Linux level is somewhat a contradiction. Kali is designed for security related stuff - I doubt that it's the best choice for Linux-beginners. AFAIK there already is (ubuntu-based) Linux subsystem available after your enable the windows developers mode in the settings. But since Kali seem to be based on debian, too you can check the system packages. I put together a page about different Linux-related cdo packages: https://code.mpimet.mpg.de/projects/cdo/wiki/Linux_Platform. Useing Docker might also work on Windows, but I never checked it.

If you want a unix-like subsystem, I can recommend cygwin. It's not a virtual machine, so the integration with the host system is better IMO.

Hi Ralf

Thanks for kind and quick reply, ... you are Right about Kali & Linux Illiteracy ....

I was trying to install NCL and for Win 10 they recommend Kali, that's why I installed it. Unfortunately results were unsuccessful, at end of installation when type "ncl" got the error "-bash: ncl: command not found". I was at a "dead" point and abandon NCL, moreover seems more graphical oriented.

As I need mainly data processing decide to move to CDO. I'm installing CygWin, ... hope can install it correctly.

Thanks again, ...

Luis

Hi Luis,

I just want to weigh in shortly. When installing NCL did you set the environment variables NCARG_ROOT and PATH as described on the NCL pages? If ncl can't be found by the system the users mostly missed the point to set these environment variables.
