CDO verion, netCDF, echam6/mpiom restart files

Hello - I have found that editing the mpiom restart files for the CMIP5 version of the code results in files which fail to be read by the code, the error is this:
1:Error: cannot open 'rerun_rcp26_r1i1p1-LR.20061231.b_mpiom.nc': Unsupported netCDF4 structure
After a while I figured out that if I use cdo version 1.4.6, the code will restart correctly. I use cdo commands in the run script to modify the restart files at startup.
It seems that performing operations on the restart files with cdo 1.5.0 results in netCDF files of file type NC_FORMAT_NETCDF4. using 1.4.6 gives NC_FORMAT_NETCDF4_CLASSIC which is the same as the original restart file type. cdo 1.4.6 was used to create the original restart files.
Any comments about this? Is it a cdo problem or a problem with the code? Previously I was doing essentially the same thing with cdo on tornado with the old echam5/mpiom and did not have any trouble.
Thanks!
Rob

I should be a bit more clear... what I mean is that using CDO 1.5.0 to modify mpiom restart files results in the above error, on blizzard. Using 1.4.6 works fine.
