Why data in GRIB and NetCDF output have different data content?
Added by cd ptt almost 14 years ago
Dear sirs,
I'm new to CDO.
I was convert GRADS file by CDO to GRIB and NetCDF format with following command
cdo -f grb import_binary result_g1.ctl result_g1.grb #for GRIB file
and
cdo -f nc import_binary result_g1.ctl result_g1.nc #for NetCDF file
Next i open these files by IDV program to display it's data content
The NetCDF file(result_g1.nc) show me the data fileds in 3D grid and 2D grid.
while the GRIB file(result_g1.grb) show me only 2D grid data fields.
(Each 2D and 3D grid compose of a data fileds inside exp. temporature, geometrical_height etc.)
Why was they have different data fields?
It should have the same data content, isn't it?
The data i looking for is Wind data which exist only in 3D grid data fields of NetCDF file.
Could it possible to have a Wind data in the GRIB file? (I means U and V data fields)
I'm also attached the grads file within this message.
They are result_g1.gra and result_g1.ctl
Thank you in advance
Best regards
Chadin

Dear Chadin,
all CDO operators produce the same data content. There should be no different between GRIB and netCDF output.
A general problem with GRIB files is that GRIB is not a file format. GRIB is a record format and each record contains exactly one horizontal 2D slice of a variable. That means all aplication reading GRIB files have to collect the 2D slices to 3D variables. I'm new to IDV. It seems that IDV is not able to collect the 3D variables.
Best regards,
Uwe
