how to calculate a time series of percentile values (not percentiles of a time series)

Added by Kyle Clem about 2 years ago

Hello CDO users,

I have a 1-D time series of daily values over 1979-2022. E.g., a time series of an index. I would like to calculate the percentile of each day's value (using the distribution of the entire time series) so that I have an equivalent time series of percentile values. That is, I'm not particularly interested in what the e.g., 90th percentile is, I'm curious how the value for each day ranks.

Is there a way to do this in CDO? I am attaching the timeseries netcdf file.

Many thanks for any help or advice,
Kyle

hi Kyle!

this is an interessting approach. I doubt that the the resulting timeseries of percentiles has any significance, but still ...

IMO this sounds like a histogram analysis: at the end you get an timeseries of bins in which the corresponding valued belongs.

just my 2ct
