installing CDO on linux Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04

I just attempted to install CDO through the package manager on laptop computer Ubuntu 16.04. An error appeared but I did not understand the message. When I type cdo I get 'command not found', so it's not installed. How best to install CDO on my system? Thanks in advance.
