Output data from NWP models, Eastern Europe

Added by Oleksandr Savchenko over 2 years ago

Good day to all. I am not an expert in meteorology and faced one issue. For research and application in the field of renewable energy, I needed historical as well as current, full forecast output data from NWP models (better global, high resolution) with a horizon of several days for the Eastern Europe region. Of the models I know, these are ECMWF, ICON and GFS. As far as I know: 1. There is no free access to historical, as well as current, forecasting data of the ECMWF model. 2. The GFS data of the model is in the public domain (although I did not check it). My questions are: Am I correct on the previous two points? is there free access to ICON data and what is the link? are there any other model data (links will be a gift). I will be grateful for your help

the german weather service runs an open data service at https://www.dwd.de/EN/ourservices/opendata/opendata.html

I think you are right about ECMWF. But they are also responsible for copernicus data store https://cds.climate.copernicus.eu/#!/home . their forecast might be available there, too. But u better as ECMWF directly. Politically ECMWF does global forecasts for all member states and hand over the data to the corresponding weather services. So this data is by definition not public. But if you have a scientific project going on you might be able to collaborate with ECMWF. anyway - you better ask them directly IMO.

Full Forecast data can be quite huge. I think a good preparation is think about which physical fields your really need, if possible.

forgot to mention: if you want to have a look at the global forcast data, check out "https://yr.no" (weather service of Norway)

Thanks for your answer, Ralph. At the DWD link, I found access to current ICON forecasts, but I never found access to historical forecasts. It seems that access is only possible through the internal network to employees of the organization, as mentioned in the ICON documentation.
For now, I have no desire to make a request for access to ECMWF data.
Thus, I come to the conclusion that only GFS provides full free access to the data I need.
Thanks again for your help

It depends a bit on what exactly you want to do. maybe the global forecast of ECMWF is fine, maybe you need more local information - I can't say

good luck with your research
